MA Minimum Wage Changes

The first in a series of three minimum wage hikes takes place in a few weeks. On January 1st, 2015 the MA minimum wage increases from $8 an hour to $9. It will increase to $10 in 2016 and to $11 in 2017. There are some exceptions. According to MGL Ch151 sections 1 and 2, commissioned sales, religious service, student trainees, disabled rehab, and some agricultural workers are exempted from the state minimum wage requirement. A special rate is established for service employees who depend mostly on tips. For example, wait staff are identified in MGL Ch151 section 7. The minimum hourly rate for this classification of labor is $3.00 on January 1st, 2015. It increases to $3.35 in 2016 and $3.75 in 2017.
