The state refunds for electronically filed returns are usually received within one week of filing. Federal refunds are usually received within 2 to 3 weeks of filing for direct deposit and 3 to 4 weeks if the check is mailed to you. the attached chart shows the federal schedule for this tax filing season: refund-cycle-chart.pdf
Bear in mind that federal refunds are always deposited on a Friday, so if you do not receive your refund when scheduled you will need to wait at least until the next week.
For tax returns sent through the mail (including amended returns) expect at least 6 to 8 weeks for processing.
If it has been at least 30 days since your tax return was electronicallly filed and accepted and you want to check on the status, call the Massachusetts Department of Revenue at 800-392-6089 for your state refund and see below for your federal refund status.
To get to your federal personal refund information, be ready to enter your:
- Social Security Number (or IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)
- Filing status (Single, Married Filing Joint Return, Married Filing Separate Return, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow(er))
- Exact refund amount shown on your return
If you don’t receive your refund within 28 days from the original IRS mailing date shown on Where’s My Refund?, you can start a refund trace online.
If Where’s My Refund? shows that IRS was unable to deliver your refund, you can change your address online.
